I am a junior year in high school and in my second year of rowing, with the Vashon Island Rowing Club. I’m a motivated self-starter and a kind, reliable team player who’s planning on a long career in rowing throughout high school, college, and beyond. I’m a well-rounded person, with a strong academic history and an array of interesting pursuits.
As of November 2025, I have signed with the University of Washington Women’s Rowing program.
I fell in love with rowing during a summer camp in July 2024. My Novice year was truly amazing. I learned how to row, be a strong and supportive member of the team, and got to stroke the 2V boat, which won first place in the Northwest Youth Regionals.
I spent the last two years as President of my local 4-H Horse club. I also co-ran a jewelry business, retailing at farmer’s markets. I currently serve as Public Relations Officer – Reporter for my high school’s chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).
For the last five years. I’ve cared for and shown horses through 4-H, competing in English and Western disciplines, including dressage. I now practice horsemanship for fun, and run a business with my sister caring for others’ horses.
From a young age I’ve been interested in supporting people who are deaf, perhaps since presenting on Helen Keller in kindergarten. During the pandemic I became fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and now practice with a group of teens and adults.
My family runs a microsanctuary for rescued rabbits and guinea pigs, which I help manage. This requires a lot of discipline and organization. Highlights so far this year include hand-catching a stray domestic rabbit and learning to administer fluids.
I’ve played piano since kindergarten and harp for several years. While I am no longer active with lessons or performing in recitals, I love being able to play these instruments during my leisure time. Like a lot of teenagers, I also really enjoy going to concerts.

“Violet is the most hard-working and driven young lady I have ever met. Her drive and passion with everything she does is truly amazing. She strives to be the best rower with each stroke. Cannot wait to see where she ends up!”
“For the past four years, I have had the good fortune to be one of Violet’s 4-H leaders. From the day she joined the Vashon Rock Riders 4-H Club her leadership qualities were evident to young members and adults alike.”
“Violet serves as a mentor and exemplar for other club members. She explains how to perform various 4-H requirements through coaching and demonstration, displaying kindness and patience with those who struggle.”
“Violet exhibits exceptional grace under pressure. Horses are unpredictable, often carrying a rider to victory or putting her in the dirt within the same hour. Whichever of these occurs at a show, she maintains a positive attitude, calm demeanor, and, above all, good sportsmanship. She loses with aplomb, wins with humility, and always finds something worthwhile about either experience.”
“Perhaps the quality I admire most about Violet is her insatiable curiosity. I would not be at all surprised if I learned that ‘why?’ was her first word! Her thirst for knowledge is unquenchable, and she puts forth the effort required to find answers to her questions.”
“I firmly believe that any college or university will be fortunate to have Violet Alpen as a member of its student body, and I recommend her to you without reservation.”
